Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones

Geeks will discuss and debate for all time what's wrong with, what should have been, and how it should have been done in regard to George Lucas's Star Wars prequel trilogy, all while still generally agreeing that the trilogy was, for the most part, a disaster (critically, of course).

The folks over at Belated Media also have their views on how the prequels could have been the movies fans so desperately wanted them to be, and they're putting their ideas out to the masses to see what everyone thinks. Not that anything can be done about it now, obviously, but hey...it's fun to pretend.

There's certainly some interesting tweaks to ponder, so be sure to continue on below to watch the video and be sure to share your thoughts in the comments! [...]

The Star Wars #1

The Star Wars #1
Written by J.W. Rinzler
Illustrated by Mike Mayhew
Adapted from an Original Rough-Draft Screenplay by George Lucas
Colored by Rain Beredo
Lettered by Michael Heisler
Cover by Nick Runge
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: September 4, 2013
Cover Price: $3.99

At first glance, the “The” in The Star Wars #1 looks like an unfortunate typo. After all, everyone knows (or should know) that the George Lucas-created Star Wars franchise doesn’t and never has carried an article before the title. It’s simply Star Wars. The “the” in this comic book series, however, isn’t a typo or mistake. It’s intentional. It’s the new eight-issue mini-series produced by Dark Horse Comics based on, as the cover proudly proclaims, Lucas’ “Original Rough-Draft Screenplay” for Star Wars (“Longer ago, in a galaxy even further away…” per the cover copy), as in the first screenplay Lucas produced on the long road (three years) between the release of American Graffiti in 1974 and the release of Star Wars three years later [...]

Star Wars #9
Script by Brian Wood
Art by Ryan Kelly, Dan Parsons, Gabe Eltaeb
Cover by Hugh Fleming
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: September 11, 2013
Cover Price: $2.99

Brian Wood’s Star Wars comic from Dark Horse persists in delivering the punches, with a flavor that will make you hear John Williams’ soundtrack as you read. Recovering from a less-than-stellar episode a few issues ago, Wood has positioned our heroes in a variety of settings, magnifying the risks, and exploring character interrelations where possible.

The Rebel Alliance is in a dire situation as it’s believed a spy is in their midst, tipping off the Empire of their locations and operations. Princess Leia, along with Luke Skywalker, and Wedge Antilles form a new Stealth X-Wing squadron, to take on black-ops missions in an effort to root out the mole. Han Solo and Chewbacca, meanwhile, are on a separate mission for Mon Mothma in the heart of the Lion’s Den: Coruscant aka Imperial Center.

Star Wars #9 opens with Leia returning to the ruins of Alderaan to observe a private moment of remembrance. There she comes across a hijacked Star Destroyer from the Clone Wars era, with one passenger: a lone Alderaanian who is seeking to preserve elements of his planet’s culture and history. But there is more to this character than meets the eye, and Leia’s astromech droid’s concerns are not without reason [...]

Star Wars #10
Written by Brian Wood
Art by Carlos D'anda, Gabe Eltaeb
Cover by Hugh Fleming
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: October 09, 2013
Cover Price: $2.99

Ten issues in and Brian Wood’s Star Wars persists in delivering the goods, and while this issue comes across as more of an effort to position our characters for the events of the next chapters, it was still a delight to read, with some beautiful artwork to complement the writing.

On an undercover mission, Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles are hidden aboard an Imperial Star Destroyer – one tracking down the location of the Rebel Fleet. Whilst awaiting their inevitable upcoming battle, the two share a private moment that is both distant yet touching, highlighting the developing friendship between them. It is during this moment the moniker “Rogue Squadron” is raised, adding an origin element to the famous X-Wing squadron. [...]

‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ Script Expected To Be Finished By January

Star Wars Episode VII

Despite having my love for all things Star Wars reduced dramatically to the status of a favorite childhood toy I needed sorrily to let go, I am holding out a little hope for Star Wars: Episode VII. J.J. Abrams is a solid director of expansive widescreen excitement and his movies tend to be pretty damn great when the crucial elements are in place. The project's first writer Michael Arndt was eventually usurped by Lawrence Kasdan, but as Kasdan was widely credited with making the script for The Empire Strikes Back a winner (original scribe Leigh Brackett had a hand in its success too), this news was greeted by the franchise's die hard fans with jubilation.

In addition to excessive CGI and lifeless performances from an otherwise talented cast, the much-loathed - yet still hugely profitable - prequel trilogy suffered from George Lucas' deplorable writing. If Abrams' continued exploration of a galaxy far, far away on the big screen is to be a success at least creatively it's vital for the screenplay to be in place prior to the start of filming [...]

It’s Not Wise To Upset A Wookiee: The Wisdom Of Being Raised On ‘Star Wars’

Star Wars logo

Here we are celebrating May The 4th, also known as Star Wars Day, once again. And I was going to try and write up something based on the new movie coming out or something cool about the cast...but I decided to go a different route. Today, I'm going to tell you about some of the most influential Star Wars-related things that have occurred in my life, starting with the original movie.

I was six when the first Star Wars film hit theaters and, as we all know, that's a highly impressionable age. The film amazed me, as I'm sure it did virtually everyone. But the true influence at that time was the line of toys that accompanied it. My first three figures were Darth Vader, R2-D2, and C-3PO. I remember being angry that the local stores were sold out when we were out shopping, but my ever-awesome Aunt Cathy managed to find those three action figures somewhere and gave them to me for my birthday about a month after the movie came out. It was the beginning of 35 years of collecting, though I had no idea of that at the time [...]

Empire Strikes Back

As fans of the Star Wars franchise the world over prepare to celebrate this year's May the 4th, I found myself giving serious consideration to writing something for Geeks of Doom in order to commemorate the occasion. After racking my brain for several constantly interrupted hours, I drew nothing but blanks.

It's difficult for me to get excited about anything Star Wars-related this days; I've written news stories about the continuing developments behind the upcoming Episode VII even though I have little interest in them, but that's part of the reason why I'm on the writing staff of this website. The stories have to be reported even though I may not care much about them because one or more of our readers certainly will. But the staggering drop in allure regarding the dauntless heroes and dastardly villains who inhabit the expansive universe that sprang forth from George Lucas' euphoric imagination more than four decades ago in my view wasn't something that happened overnight. It took many unpleasant, heartbreaking years.

However, I came not to talk about how much Star Wars has disappointed me over time. May 4th is meant to be a day of remembrance and celebration. With that in mind I will instead document in brief to the best of my abilities the role Lucas' creation has played in inspiring me to embrace my own evolving sense of wonder and take control of my intellectual maturation [...]

Star Wars and Samurai

Time for a movie history lesson!

Most movie fans are well aware that samurai movies---most notably Akira Kurosawa's 1958 film The Hidden Fortress---heavily inspired George Lucas in making 1977's Star Wars, but it goes much deeper than that. Many don't know the history behind it all, and a new video is here to educate all those who are interested in acquiring a little knowledge on the topic.

You can check out the video, created by YouTube channel CineFix, below. [...]

Does "Imperial March"-ing make you hungry? When you come home after a long day searching for droids, do you need a snack? The face of Subway, Jared Fogel, and members of the Boys & Girls Club of Bridgeport, CT, (home of the first Subway ever) joined some Star Wars Stormtroopers who happened to be in the neighborhood, to celebrate twofold on Thursday, August 28, 2014, in New York City. Say what you want about what George Lucas has done to the Star Wars franchise, but from the moment Disney acquired Lucasfilm from him, they've made all sorts of announcements that would make any fan of the franchise smile. While we wait eleven more months to see the fruits of that acquisition with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Lucas is talking about some of the other Star Wars-related projects he's working on under his previously-owned Lucasfilm.

While doing promotions for his animated film Strange Magic, Lucas is admitting that he was starting to work on a new Star Wars trilogy before he sold his company to Disney. But there were from prior commitments that prevented him from actually doing it. It the jump for more details [...]

Nearly two months after its release to the general public, the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has finally been seen ... by George Lucas!

The Star Wars creator, who is making the rounds this month to promote his animated feature Strange Magic, had repeatedly said that he had not seen the teaser for J.J. Abrams' highly anticipated first installment of the newest Star Wars trilogy. But, the 70-year-old filmmaker told New York Post's Page Six on Saturday during a screening of his new film that he has now seen it and that he thought it was "intriguing." [...]

George Lucas Confirms His ‘Star Wars’ Sequel Ideas Were Ditched By Disney

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Millennium Falcon

Now George Lucas's reaction to seeing the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer is starting to make a bit more sense. Recently the Star Wars creator confirmed that he was working on a new set of sequels before he sold the rights to Disney. In addition to transferring ownership of Star Wars, Lucas also gave his ideas and plot outlines for future sequels.

Lucas has had a hand in the stories for all of the Star Wars films, but The Force Awakens will be the first film that is not based on Lucas's ideas. At first Michael Arndt was hired to write a draft, based on those initial ideas, before the sale was made. The script would put greater focus on the new characters that would be introduced in the film, with the characters from the original trilogy acting as secondary characters. However, he was suddenly taken off the project, and director J.J. Abrams took over writing the script with Lawrence Kasdan. Hit the jump for more. [...]

William Shakespeare's The Phantom of Menace: Star Wars Part The First
Hardcover | Kindle Edition
Written by Ian Doescher
Illustrations by Nicolas Delort

Quirk Books
Release Date: April 7, 2015

This month, just in time for The Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California, comes another Shakespearean parody of the Jedi variety. William Shakespeare's The Phantom of Menace: Star Wars Part The First by Ian Doescher (with some help from George Lucas and William Shakespeare) merges Part I of The Star Wars Trilogy with the language of Shakespeare.

Obi-Wan: I have a bad feeling about this, Master.
Qui-Gon: Yet sense I nothing. Wherefore art thou tense?
Obi-Wan: 'Tis not about the mission - something else.
Elusive 'tis, aye, difficult to name.

Star Wars Return of the Jedi: May the 4th Darth Vader

The truth: I was having trouble coming up with a Star Wars May the Fourth feature that would be just as good or better than what I wrote last year. I had more time, I do a lot of reviews now, and my brain wasn't working. Luckily, I ran into friends Brad and Christine, who provided me with an idea. Based on the passion with which they spoke about it, it seemed like something worth talking about, especially since "Hans shot first," is obviously out of the way. The question?

Why doesn't Darth Vader or Obi-Wan acknowledge C3PO (or R2D2), when the former built Threepio as a child, and hung alot with R2, and the latter spent so much time with them? [...]

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

Trust me when I tell you I was stupid crazy over Star Wars as a kid. I spent every available cent I could on the toys back in the seventies. I collected, I traded, I begged for more. But as with all things in our childhood, the things that were so very important to us back then, can become less so as we grow up. Wait a second, who am I lying to here? I am still just as big of a fan and I would still play with the action figures on the playground if it wasn't completely creepy for a middle-aged man to be doing so. I wrote an article last year about how profoundly Star Wars affected me as a child, you can read it here. However, what I'd like to talk to you about today is the new Star Wars movie as it affects my youngest [...]

Why Did Disney Scrap The Lucas ‘Star Wars’ Episode VII Plot?

George Lucas, Goofy, and Mickey Mouse

Part of the reason why the Star Wars prequels didn't work, was because of all the teenage drama that was going on at the time. So when Disney acquired the rights to LucasFilm, and George Lucas had announced that he would be retiring from the franchise, there was a small sigh of relief. The director admitted that Disney had scrapped his ideas for the sequel, but those ideas were somewhat of a secret [...]

Roger Christian's Short Film Black Angel

Star Wars creator George Lucas wanted a short film to play before the sequel, The Empire Strikes Back, back in 1980.

Roger Christian, who won a Best Art Direction-Set Decoration Academy Award for his work on the original Star Wars (also credited as the creator of the lightsaber and R2-D2) and was also nominated for the same Oscar for his work on Ridley Scott's Alien, had written a short titled Black Angel. When Lucas read it, he decided it was exactly what he was looking for.

After the theatrical run, Black Angel was lost and remained so for around 30 years until just a few years ago when it turned back up. Now, fully restored, the short film has been made available for all to see, and you can do so below. [...]
